only the highest quality discussions here today

I write to you as Chip luxuriates on our bed, watching Big Trouble in Little China.  Doing such a thing (me writing as he watches) has me thinking about the August Television Doldrums.  Does anyone else feel this way about now?  When you don't think you can stand another round of flipping channels just hoping for something interesting, something funny, something even mildly entertaining?  When you've exhausted your entire library of DVD's three times over and simply don't want to contemplate how it can be to access something like 100+ television channels and THERE IS STILL NOTHING TO WATCH.

Lately, we've been watching The Great Food Truck Race on the Food Network.  It's a bright spot in the late August yuck; as is Project Runway, but in that I'm just speaking for myself.  When Chip sees it's on, his eyes roll into the back of his head and it's possible he goes into a walking coma.

But September, dear September brings with it NEW TELEVISION CONTENT.  Or, at least the promise of it.  Somehow I can stand waiting until the end of the month, just knowing that there will be something new to watch.

Not to say that we live for television, but there is something so necessarily restful about turning on the Box in the evening and just forgetting about the stresses of the day.

So.  That's my first Good 'Ber Thing: television.  (And that's what you've come to expect from The Creamery: QUALITY CONTENT.)  And I think I can say this safely, even for those of you in the outer reaches of Texas and South Dakota (hello Alicia & Tearese!)--- it doesn't matter how hot it is outside, new TV is pretty good.

Now tell me, and let's not be proud: are you looking forward to watching anything in particular this Fall?  What about that new thing from the people who did Lost?  (And so help me, if you tell me that you simply don't watch television, you are dead to me.)

We are down to watching Golden Girls and Whose Line Is It Anyway -, so yes -- right there with 'ya. New Dr. Who is in our upcoming recordings lineup - yay! along with some new Curious George and Super Why which Shelby will like, although she's happy watching the "Mother's Day" George episode over and over and over and over and over ..... something about the comfort of the familiar. The Closer ...House ...Eureka ...Bones ...and yes, Glee :-)

We are super cheap these days and do not have cable. Life as poor grad students I suppose. What we do is watch stuff on Hulu for free instead. Over the summer we have watched "In Plain Sight", "Covert Affairs", and "Royal Pains". I know. Super classy. It's nice over hulu because it spreads out over the summer. I'm looking forward to 'Bones' and 'NCIS'. And I should specify that when I say 'we', I really mean me. Joe doesn't do TV. Except for the occasional show we can get on Netflix. He gets bored easily with TV.

I have high hopes for "Up all Night" with Christina Applegate and Will Arnett. Other than that, nothing. All the new shows I started watching last fall got canceled.

Every fall I am filled with anticipation and excitment that there may be another "Lost" among the new shows. Obviously that sort of fabulous does not come often. Last year I was all atwitter and within 3 months we no longer watched one show that was new that year. Not one. Pathetic. That has left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth so I'm jaded and bitter and not as excited as usual. I will at least try most anything done by JJ Abrams or starring some of the old Lost cast members. Of course, it goes without saying if Joss has a new show, I'm there but I sadly think he's lost his taste for tv with the screwing over he's had to endure from the networks.

Can we revisit this in a couple months?

There was a 3- to 4-year period until when G was about a year and a half when we didn't have tv at all. It was kinda glorious. We bought a tv the night of the last presidential election. We got rid of cable when we moved recently, though, so it's now really a Netflix transmitter.

We watch Project Runway. That's about it. We have other things we watch periodically, but nothing very serial. Except Dexter. (BWAHAHAAA.) Mostly we just watch movies and series on Netflix. The last series we finished is EMBARRASSING, so I will leave out that detail.

Oh. I should explain that we watch PR on a laptop, so you don't think I'm a liar who catches herself in lies WHILE TELLING THEM.

I guess I'm dead to you, because I don't watch television. I don't even own a television. On the other hand, there is a new Tinkerbell movie being released this month...
