schooled

One of the places I've diverged from others: the schooling of Miss Alice.  We are seriously considering the pros and cons and wherewithal of homeschooling this small firecracker.  There is reading and praying and lots and lots of talking involved.  I come to the topic in fits and starts, which is why I have yet to tell you about it much at all.

In the mean time, I've joined a small group of women in a preschool co-op.

We take turns each week, teaching the children.

It was my turn yesterday.  The letter B and number 1.  Have I mentioned that our preschool is comprised of three boys and Alice?

They all did so well, even though I was terrified.

We sang songs, talked, pretended to be honeybees, ate a snack of Bread and Bananas, and made stripey Bumble B's.

It was kind of awesome.

Considering that your last post was about unsolicited advice, I wonder if I should even say this... lol.

I like "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons", you can find it on Amazon! The lessons really ARE easy, all you need is the book, and some pencil and paper for the end of every lesson. That's it! I love how I don't really have to prepare anything. :)

Just thought I'd throw that out there, if you were looking for help with teaching Alice to read. (Hopefully this doesn't fall under your unsolicited advice arena... if so, I'm sorry)!

There was a time when I thought we would homeschool (and we still might, for middle school, for Kieran). But anyway, I bought a bunch of good books. We MAY still have them (or we MAY have taken them to HPB when we moved). I'm not sure because, if we DO still have them, they're still in boxes in the garage.

ANYWAY. IF we DO still have them, would you like them?

I've been wondering if I need to include some sort of karate or judo into London's 'preschool' education. A friend of mine is dealing with her kindergartener getting beat up. The bully regularly hits her, knocks her down, sits on her chest, and chokes her. Then she proceeds to tell her that she will never breathe again. It's also lovely that the bully's parents never show to conferences.

It sounds like your co-op is a much nicer place.

I always thought I would homeschool, but unfortunately we like our kids' schools just enough not to. But I still think about it a lot.

I should do more crafts with my kids. I never feel like it, but always enjoy it when we get going.

Hey, this pre-school co-op is awesome. Love all the B things.

I heard a great quote about homeschooling the other day: "I used to think that those daily battles of wills were a bug in the homeschooling system; now I see them as a feature. Homeschooling acts as a magnifying glass, enlarging your view of any cracks that run through the foundation of your family, thus allowing you to address them before they grow larger and deeper." -Jennifer Fulwiler

Every year as we march kids toward adulthood, what Mrs. Fulwiler says becomes more true.

Oh to have a child that would get to be in your pre school. The fun and learning to be had. I envy those you get to work with... I wish my children were young.
