how weird family traditions are born

It started with Bean and Chip. Whenever he did bathtime with her, they'd do this funny noise-making session in the bathroom mirror after brushing her teeth. I didn't witness it for a long while, only listening from a nearby room. I'd hear them both go quiet for a few seconds and then a little burst of synchronized mumbling from the two of them. I had no idea what was going on.

Then one day I witnessed it firsthand - the two of them dipping forward into the mirror three times with their tongues sticking out, making this noise: LA LA LA, LA LA LA, LA LA LA.

You know where this is going, I'm sure.

Um. Yeah.

Every night, post bath, the whole family gathers 'round the mirror and goes LA LA LA, LA LA LA, LA LA LA.

Whatcha got for odd little family quirk things?

The things you do for babies...

We used to sing the MaNaMaNah (from Sesame Street) for our baby girl. One of us would sing "MaNaMaNah" and the other would sing "DooDooDooDoo" back and forth, just to make her laugh. We still break out in the song now but she looks at us like we're weirdos.

Hahaha, my husband used to pop up our kids up in front of the mirror after wrapping them up in a towel and sing part of that West Side Story song... "Who's the pretty girl/little boy in the mirror there?"

I have no kids, but when I myself was a tyke: Blowing out the lights. My dad did it with us because his dad used to do it with him. Of course, his dad also grew up at least sometimes without electricity.

After we were in bed, my dad would say, "Are you ready to blow out the light?" And then he'd count to three, and then we'd blow, hard, in the direction of the light, and he'd turn it off. I LOVED it.

I like the blowing out the light thing. :) That is the cutest picture I have ever seen, btw.

My mom used to wake me up with "crawly bugs" - basically just tickly fingers but starting with them walking really slowly, then running, then being tickly, from feet to neck. She did this mostly when I was little, but it continued occasionally throughout high school. Whenever I was really hard to wake up, that would always make me smile and come to life.

I shouldn't tell this but I need to share....just don't mention is to the Mr.
When I married the Mr, we spent our first Christmas Eve at his with his family. The time came to end the night with Christmas songs. Next thing I knew we were all holding hands in a circle. A Christmas song was started and the circle began to move (imagine ring -a- round- the- rosie to Jingle bells). This was a tradition. As we had children they were introduced to this tradition. As they got older, our children hated this... they would close all the blinds so no one could see us. When they got married they would not mention this tradition.... the first time we did it with SIL's they would look around at us like we were nuts. This year we really surprised our daughters 2 exchange students when we did it. It is a tradition we rarely share..... until now!!! "}
